Move over, interwebs, the print media still exists!
Thank you, Lee Littlewood, for the shout out in this round up of Halloween books that are sure to destroy innocent lives and cause sleepless nights. I mean: inspire reading!
I’m glad to be included.
These new books are super fun and help kids get in the mood for the year’s spookiest holiday.
By James Preller; Feiwel and Friends; 98 pages; $5.99
Dedicated to the memory of The Twilight Zone and host Rod Serling, Scary Tales: One-Eyed Doll — a little paperback with larger text and a clear, classic writing style — is a slightly shock-worthy story that’s fun and spine-tingling.
It stars a brother and sister who love to explore the woods and an old house near their home. They particularly enjoy treasure hunting, this time with neighbor “Soda Pop,” who helps them discover a creepy one-eyed doll witch with lots of scary havoc to wreak.
The fifth in James Preller’s “Scary Tales” series (the next is Swamp Monster), the quick reads, peppered with spooky black sketches, make fun Halloween reads for 8- to 10-year-olds.
Also noted:
The Graveyard Book: Volume 2 by Neil Gaiman, adapted by P. Craig Russell
The Scarecrows’ Wedding by Axel Scheffler
Evil Librarian by (my pal) Michelle Knudsen

Lots happening for Jigsaw Jones these days. A brand new title, The Case of the Hat Burglar, centered around the school’s “Lost and Found” table. It’s the best Jigsaw Jones yet! Plus the publication of 4 previously out-of-print titles, now revised and updated. By the start of next school year, there will be 14 Jigsaw Jones titles in print and available, published by Macmillan.
NOTE: I ran this contest the previous two years, and I’m doing it again. AND ALSO: The odds of winning are not as hard as you might suspect. HINT: Nobody reads blogs anymore!
Welcome, Fearless Readers! Here we are nearing the ghostly season when things go bump, and squish, and hooowl in the night.
I wish to remind educators and young readers that the books in my “Scary Tales” series will make your life better by upwards to 63% or less.
No one gets murdered in these stories, everybody comes out okay, but the suspense might rattle your cage. Reminds me of that great line by Oscar Wilde: “The suspense is terrible. I hope it will last.”
Here’s how you can win a free book.
Yes, free book, mailed to your domicile.
I’ll show six illustrations below by the great Iacopo Bruno, one from each of the “Scary Tales” titles in random order. Beneath that, I’ll list the titles. You or (hopefully) your students or children need to match the illustrations with the correct titles. Then send an email to me at Jamespreller@aol.com under the subject heading SCARY TALES. Entries must be received by October 20th. On that date, I will send a signed book to six randomly-selected fearless readers who respond with their best answers. (Don’t have to be right!)
Please feel free to share this page with friends and foes and fish and fowl alike.
